Comuna
about
Comuna, a community gathering space in Orange County, uses a nature-centric design to create a refuge from daily stress, offering a safe space for underrepresented groups. It empowers women, people of color, and displaced individuals to reconnect, build support systems, and find healing through innovative and intentional material use.
process
The primary challenge was to blend biophilic and interspecies design principles, requiring a deep understanding of natural patterns in the Southern Californian environment and the needs of local fauna. Additionally, selecting and sourcing material samples that are both eco-friendly and create a calming and nature-centric environment was another challenge.
The materials used in COMUNA's interior design are both innovative and sustainable. They feature locally sourced desert sand bricks developed by the ARDH Collective in Dubai, cork panels from Muratto for sound absorption, Paperstone for dining tables and counters made from 100% recycled paper, and algae panels installed on the ceiling to clean indoor air through photosynthesis. Additionally, I created a bioplastic based on Agar Agar, which is sourced from algae. The installed algae panels have harvestable algae that can be used to create reusable plates and cups made out of bioplastic.
results
